- information sharing (easy accessibility from anywhere)
- promote communication and collaboration (email & message broadcast)

basic networking concepts is topology (physical layout of the network), protocol (rules in data communication), and architecture (how software and hardware are integrated to form a working).
3 elements that must exist in data communication are sender, medium and receiver.next,characteristics of data transmission are bandwidth, analog or digital, and serial or parallel (order of bits).
